NorthStar Math
@ Chadwick International
Our initiative aims to foster a healthy learning environment for students of all ages. Through an exploration of different learning methods, NorthStar Math implements the most effective and healthy teaching techniques to guide students through their learning journey.
VS Exploratory
With its constant position and steady brightness, the North Star has been the guiding light to many people throughout the ages. Our initiative strives for a similar goal: to be the constant presence, that guides students through difficult math concepts.
We are currently running an Exploratory in the Village School under this initiative. Teaching Grade 4 and 5 students middle school math based on the investigation format and the Harkness method, we aim to enhance the students’ understanding of math.
What do we do?
Individual Investigations
Students use investigation worksheets that are meticulously designed to guide the learner to discover a specific concept on their own. Through solving problems and noticing patterns, students have chances to individually grow as critical thinkers.
Harkness Method Discussions
After one individual investigation session, the students gather around a round table to share the approaches they took to solve a particular problem. They share the patterns they noticed, and the concepts they found during the investigation process. Through communicating and engaging with fresh perspectives, the students take ownership of their learning.
Middle School Tours
Once every round, our leaders organize a meeting with one MS Math Teacher, so that the VS students can ask questions about Middle School math. Additionally, the VS students explore the MS facilities, including classrooms, the library, and the cafeteria, to gain a good idea on how Middle School life would be like.
